Know Two Ways Out: A Simple Plan That Can Save Lives

When a fire occurs, every second counts. That's why the Chatham County Fire Department encourages every family to have and practice a home fire escape plan. Identify two ways out of every room, typically a door and a window, and create a map of your home so everyone knows the safest escape routes. Choose a designated meeting place outside where your family will gather after escaping, and practice your plan regularly so everyone knows exactly what to do in an emergency. If a fire starts, get out immediately, crawl low under smoke if necessary, and go directly to your family's meeting place. Most importantly, once you're out, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building for people, pets, or belongings. Planning ahead and practicing your escape can make all the difference when every second matters.
