Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher can help stop a small fire from becoming a major emergency—but only if it's used safely and correctly. The Chatham County Fire Department encourages every home and business to keep a properly maintained fire extinguisher readily accessible and to learn how to use it before an emergency occurs. A fire extinguisher should only be used on small, contained fires when you have a clear escape route behind you and after everyone else has safely evacuated and called 911. Remember the PASS technique: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle at the base of the flames, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side until the fire is out. If the fire continues to grow, produces heavy smoke, or you feel unsafe at any time, leave the area immediately, close the door behind you if possible, and wait for firefighters to arrive. Your safety is always the top priority.
