Chatham County Fire Department Firefighters Volunteer at Camp Fierce: Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Fire Service

Two of Chatham County Fire Department’s own, Firefighters Shalana Roemeling and Mackenzie Vickers recently volunteered their time and expertise at Camp Fierce, part of the Oklahoma Women on Fire’s Fifth Annual 2 ½ Day Camp in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

The camp is designed to introduce women and young adults, ages 16 and up, to the world of firefighting through realistic, hands-on experiences. This year, 52 volunteers, including 48 women from across the country, came together to mentor, train, and inspire participants.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), only about 9% of firefighters in the United States are women, a number that organizations like Camp Fierce are determined to increase.

Campers experienced firsthand what it takes to wear the gear and do the job. They suited up in full turnout gear, conducted search and rescue drills, practiced hose management, witnessed an ATF Burn Cell demonstration that recreates real-world fire scenarios and various fire related challenges. Each scenario and skill is designed to challenge, teach, and empower.
