Chatham County Fire's Girls Summer Camp Ignites Confidence and Leadership

The Chatham County Fire Department made history this summer with the launch of its inaugural Girls Summer Fire Camp, a hands-on, immersive experience created to introduce young women to the exciting and challenging world of the fire service.

Over the course of a high-energy three days, a group of high school girls from across Chatham County stepped into turnout gear, climbed ladders, flowed water from a fire hose, and learned life-saving skills from the dedicated women and men of CCFD.

“This camp isn’t just about firefighting,” said CCFD Training Chief Joshua Anderson. “It’s about empowerment. We want these girls to know there’s a place for them in public safety and that they have what it takes to lead, to serve, and to break boundaries.”

Campers participated in a wide range of hands-on activities designed to build confidence and teamwork, including:

  • Fire suppression and hose drills
  • Search and rescue simulations
  • CPR and first aid basics
  • Team-building challenges
  • Fire apparatus and equipment demonstrations

They also met with female firefighters and leaders from CCFD who shared their personal journeys into the fire service.

This camp marks a significant step in CCFD’s commitment to inclusion, community engagement, and inspiring the next generation of emergency responders.

As the program grows, CCFD plans to offer additional sessions and mentorship opportunities throughout the year.

“Our hope is that this experience lights a fire in them,” said Training Chief Joshua Anderson, who developed and coordinated the three-day curriculum. “Whether they pursue firefighting, EMS, or another path, we want them to leave here stronger, more confident, and more connected to their community.”

The camp ended with a special graduation ceremony attended by families, CCFD leadership, where each camper was recognized for her courage, growth, and commitment.
