Inside the Chatham County Fire Department Boys Fire Camp: Developing Future Leaders Through Teamwork and Training

This week, the Chatham County Fire Department hosted its annual Boys Fire Camp, giving young participants an unforgettable, hands-on look at what it takes to be a firefighter.

From the moment camp kicked off, the boys were immersed in the world of fire service. learning about teamwork, safety, and the vital role firefighters play in protecting the communities they serve.

Throughout the three days, campers suited up in real turnout gear, learned how to handle fire hoses, practiced basic first aid, and even got a close-up view inside a fire engine. One of the highlights came when campers were given a live demonstration inside the department’s burn building, not literally, but through a thermal imaging camera, showing how firefighters see and move through heavy smoke and extreme heat during real emergencies.

Each activity was designed to teach responsibility, confidence, and respect, key traits that define every firefighter.

Training Chief Joshua Anderson said the camp reflects CCFD’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and youth development.

“We want our young people to understand that firefighting is about more than putting out fires,” said Chief Anderson. “It’s about teamwork, leadership, and helping others, values that carry over into every part of life.”

As the three days wrapped up, campers walked away with new skills, stronger friendships, and a greater appreciation for the men and women who serve their community every day.

The Chatham County Fire Department extends a heartfelt thank-you to the instructors and parents who made this year’s Boys Fire Camp a success.
