Chatham County Fire Department firefighters attend SAM digital water control demonstration

Embracing Innovation: CCFD Explores the SAM Fire System

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving fireground operations and enhancing firefighter safety, the Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) recently had the opportunity to witness a live demonstration of the SAM System. It is a cutting-edge digital fire pump control and water management system that is reshaping how departments across the country approach incident response.
The SAM (Simple Apparatus Management) System is an intelligent, automated water management platform designed to simplify pump operations, reduce human error, and optimize resource deployment during fire suppression efforts. This groundbreaking technology integrates pump control, tank management, and valve operation into a single touchscreen interface, allowing operators to manage water flow with precision and confidence.
During the demonstration, CCFD personnel saw firsthand how the SAM System automates key pump functions and gives fireground personnel real-time visibility into water supply and usage. The system identifies and enables designated water usage normally assigned to the pump operator, who would now be available for fire attack, rescue, and support roles. With intuitive controls and advanced diagnostics, the SAM System enhances situational awareness and speeds up decision-making when seconds matter most.
One of the system’s most promising advantages is its potential to reduce stress and cognitive load on pump operators and minimizing the risk of mistakes during high-pressure situations. The SAM System also adapts to a variety of apparatus configurations, making it a flexible solution for both urban and rural fire departments.

As technology continues to evolve, Chatham County Fire remains focused on exploring tools that support our mission: protecting lives, property, and the environment through excellence in service. The SAM System represents a significant step forward in integrating smart technology with traditional firefighting principles.

We will continue to evaluate its capabilities as part of our broader strategy to modernize fire service delivery in Chatham County.
