Chatham County Fire Department Officer Academy Honors the Memory of Fallen South Carolina Firefighter.

As the sun rose on CCFD Station 3 on the morning of April 2, 2025, you can hear the sounds of fire officers performing their ritual PT. But this was not just another day of morning PT, this was different.

Firefighters are driven by purpose, intent, passion, and perseverance. Today, these officers were honoring the memory of a fallen brother. In doing so, they dedicated their morning PT routine to Irmo Fire District firefighter James “J” Muller. Those close to him knew him as “J”, he was a devoted husband, father, brother, and son.

As a Graduate of the South Carolina Fire Officer Academy 23-01, J’s impact on the Irmo Fire District was profound. His energy was contagious—not just in his firefighting career, but in every aspect of life. He led by example, inspiring those around him with his positivity, humor, and unwavering commitment to service. He was not just a firefighter; he was a mentor, a leader, and a true servant to the community. Firefighter Muller dedicated seven years to the Irmo Fire District. He was deeply respected by his peers and known for his unwavering passion for the job.

When the call came out for a structure fire on May 26, 2023, J and his department did what they do best, respond with purpose and passion. It was on this call that J, sadly would fight his last fire.

Once on scene, muliple fire departments joined Irmo in performing interior suppression activities when tragedy struck. Structural collapse injured two Irmo Fire District firefighters and claimed the life of firefighter Muller, he was just 25 years of age, leaving behind a wife, son and loving family.

To honor his memory, CCFD Officer Academy members performed three rounds of PT consisting of 20 push-ups, 15-4 count mountain climbers, 10 up/downs, 7 air pack thrusters, 3-4 count SCBA bent over rows, and 2-50ft bear crawls totaling 171 reps.
