Captain Andrew Ulmer scores an FTO candidate

CCFD Shaping the Next Generation of Leadership with Implementation of the Field Training Officer Program

The Chatham County Fire Department is making a tremendous investment in workforce development and in turn fortifying its commitment to the highest level of service to the community. The Field Training Officer Program (FTO) enhances training capabilities and ensures the highest standards of professional development within the department.

Ther FTO Program looks to accomplish three goals. First, FTO’s will serve as mentors and instructional leaders for department personnel. Second, they will be specifically assigned to guide recent graduate firefighters, ensuring each receive consistent training, clear instruction, and strong support during their first six months on shift. Third, the program affords an opportunity for personnel interested in pursuing officer roles to gain valuable leadership experience and demonstrate their readiness to contribute to the future success of the department.

Eligible candidates must have a minimum of two years of experience with CCFD and have NPQ/IFSAC Instructor 1 and Fire Officer 1 certifications. They will need to complete the CCFD Physical Agility Test in full Personal Protective Equipment and breathing apparatus and successfully pass a written examination. Candidates selected for the program must successfully complete a five-day (60 hour) FTO training program.

The FTO program reflects the training philosophy of CCFD Training Chief Joshua Anderson: 'We do this for them.' This guiding principle underscores our commitment to building a strong cultural foundation centered on delivering the highest level of service to our community.
